Two Tips To Go Green!!

1. Keep Your Trash Clean...
If you are a MTC toner customer, you know we have been involved with toner cartridge recycling for years.
We have also collected and recycled our internal office paper and cardboard for a number of years.  We feel we can build on that base and make our little corner of KC a better environment for our employees and our customers.
In addition MTC is collecting plastics, cans, paperboard packaging and batteries that we all generate everyday.  We are adopting a "no electronics in the trash" policy by refurbishing, parting out or dismantling printers and computers and making sure they are ultimately disposed of properly.
We are lucky to have a great electronics recycling resource here in KC - Surplus Exchange.  Visit their website and see what a great job they're doing.

2. Green Your PC...
The rapid advancement of computer technology has had a very nasty and unforeseen impact on the environment. When you
consider that computers now consume about 10 percent of the electricity generated in the U.S., and that many computers end up
in landfills releasing deadly chemicals, it makes sense to adopt more eco-friendly technology options.

In upcoming newsletters we'll let you know how we're doing with our recycling and give you more tips and resources to help you be more GREEN.

Updating Your Network

The single most important thing you can do as a computer user is visit Microsoft Update a couple of times a month.  New security patches are released frequently, so it is not only the smart thing to do, it's the responsible thing to do.  As a member of the Internet community, it is your responsibility to make sure your PC is immune to exploits and vulnerabilities that can turn your computer into a zombie machine that propagates SPAM and viruses. Setup automated updates so your system will download critical files and install them when necessary.

You can visit the Microsoft Update site or call MTC to take care of the updates for you.
MTC can also minimize disruptions to the work environment by remotely resolving issues using a secure VPN system.  Our certified engineers & technicians will help you with your LAN/WAN design & implementation of Windows, Outlook, Exchange,  Microsoft Server 2008,  Remote Users and VPN Custom Programming.

Did you know that MTC was one of the first ones to be involved in the Microsoft RDP program? Yes, we've trained and installed Windows Server 2008 at our customer's site before the launch date in February 2008!

TIME IS RUNNING OUT!
Economic Stimulus Act Of 2008

The Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 contains two provisions that provide tax benefits for businesses.
The first provision increases the limit up to which a business can expense property purchased and placed in service during its 2008 tax year.
The second provision provides an additional 50 percent special depreciation allowance for property acquired and placed in service during calendar year 2008.
Unlike the economic stimulus payments that millions of individuals have already received, the tax benefits for businesses are not automatic; businesses must act to take advantage of the new provisions by purchasing qualifying property.

The Joint Committee on Taxation estimates that businesses stand to lower their 2008 tax bills by roughly $45 billion as a result of the two business provisions in the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008; these provisions accelerate into 2008 the tax benefits that otherwise would not have been available until future years.

Do you know your Computer History?

The first personal computer is considered to be the Kenback-1, which was first introduced for $750 in 1971. The computer relied on a series of switches for inputting data and output data by turning on and off a series of lights.  In 1975 Ed Roberts coined the term personal computer when he introduced the Altair 8800.

Virtualization

Virtualization is the process that takes many servers or desktops and condenses
them into one allowing your business exceptional value in reducing administration
and operating costs.

Tech Tips:

Printing and Imaging

Printers and paper hate changes in the weather even more than we do.  Now that the heat's been on at least a couple times, it's time to remember how to keep our printers happy when it's cold outside.  Static is usually our biggest problem during the winter.  If your paper is stored in an unheated warehouse or closet, bring it into the room where it will be used at least 12 hours before use, to get it acclimated to the room temperature.  Keep paper in the ream and in the box until it is used - just put enough paper in for the days use if you're in a high static environment.  Flex your paper before use, but do not fan it - that just makes more static.  You can wipe your paper tray down with a dryer sheet or spray it with Static Guard, if there are rollers in the tray, don't get it on them.  Don't set your printer on a cold window ledge or on a heat vent.  If you are having paper feed or paper jam problems, try fresh paper before calling for service.

Networking

Your HP ProLiant server (and other brands) monitors many facets of its health like tracking errors and documenting areas of weakness?  Servers are the heart of your network so their health and performance are mission critical to your business.  Thus manufacturers design monitors within servers documenting their status by constantly update internal error logs.  A properly trained technician can access and interpret these logs to learn the operational status of the processor, hard drives, power supply, and various other subsystems.

If the logs are not read on a regular basis, you are overlooking a key reliability feature.  Have you had all your server error logs reviewed and interpreted this week?  Do you have someone that knows what to do with this critical data your server provides?  At MTC, we have HP certified server engineers that can utilize this embedded technology to identify and address these errors before they take your business off-line.  Call us today to avert a system shut-down, or your can wait till the error becomes obvious to everyone.  We'd rather help your server goes down.

Give us a call.  Maybe we can catch a problem before it becomes one. 816.471.3553 or contact us at service@mtcweb.com.

True Cost of Printing

The price tag on any given printer really tells only half the story. Many times the cheapest printer for sale isn't necessarily the cheapest printer to own. And what's the most affordable printer for you in particular?
Depending on how many pages you print and how much it costs to print each page, a high-priced printer with expensive cartridges could be a lot cheaper to own in the long run than a less-expensive printer with low-cost cartridges.
Coming up with that long-run cost for comparison is exactly what our specialists at MTC can do for you! Make sure to check with us to see how we can save you money in the long run!

Ten reasons you know you're living in 2008:

1. You accidentally enter your password on the microwave.

3. You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of 3.

4. You e-mail the person who works at the desk next to you.

5. Your reason for not staying in touch with friends and family is that they don't have e-mail addresses.

7. Every commercial on television has a web site at the bottom of the screen.

8. Leaving the house without your cell phone, which you didn't have the first 20 or 30 (or 60) years of your life, is now a cause for panic and you turn around to go and get it.

9. You get up in the morning and go online before getting your coffee.

10. You're reading this and nodding and laughing. :)
